Thyroid
Disease (C0) at Elsenham July 2000
I’m afraid that men over 90 are so few that they give a very odd
picture here. The truth is that all forms of thyroid abnormality
are much commoner in women of all ages.
In the practice we have a policy of routinely checking the TSH over
the age of 75. The cost benefit of this policy is reflected in the prevalence
in the elderly. Undiagnosed hypothyroidism can easily be missed and appear as
confused behaviour, hypothermia or unexplained
illness.
