The idea of a minimal data set is an important concept.

To be able to make any sense of what you are doing data needs to be coded in a consistent manner.

We have tried here to give a list of READ codes which fit on one side of A4 and yet cover the major conditions encountered in General Practice.

This list can be seen in two different formats, one in HTML and one in Office. Select whichever is easiest for you to edit.

Elsenham Surgery have been collecting data under the Read Codes since about 1994. You can access these in the link below.

They should give you some idea of what to expect. Clearly there will be major differences in the distribution of disease if you are looking after populations with varying backgrounds.
